Flooring
Here at the Cathedral where they sell second hand books I noticed this mosaic flooring. This Roman pavement was found in Dome Alley (nearby to the cathedral) in 1880 and was placed here with 2 fragments found in Rome and some English medieval tiles.
I think it's incredible that they have just left it there for anyone to walk on. So many artefacts get squirrelled away, never to see the light of day again.
Janerowena beat me to it, I too am very surprised that it is open for people to just walk over it. It is incredible how old this must be. Paul at Leeds in Yorkshire photography
How very cool for you to have literally stumbled across that! I am also surprised that it is just sitting there on the floor of a secondhand bookshop. But that is how I picture England, chock full of historic treats for everyone to enjoy.
I think at the Cathedral there's just so much history, that in the end they just have to use it in daily life rather than have it as a museum piece, which is good - as long as it doesn't get damaged!
Great pavement but also great that the second hand bookshop keeps going

ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful tile work.
ReplyDeleteI love the mishmash of different flooring and of old floor plus books.
ReplyDeleteThe mosaic design looks just like ones in Israel.
Wouldnt it be great if and when that mosaic floor gets restored, id love to get my hands on that one! :)
