So, my last post noted that The White Swan had closed, it now appears to be in the process of re opening as The Mucky Duck.
Selling itself as a sports pub, not sure what that will mean, Sky Sports on full blast? We'll see! At least it's not closed down completely which is always a sad sight to see.
I'm pleased to see the pub is still open... but that sort of nonsense by the front door puts me off I'm afraid.
ReplyDeletePerhaps they will welcome the "Worthy Winchester Hash House Harriers" occasionally for their winter evenings' sport!
Yes it kind of put me off too! Makes me think, maybe it's not a pub for me, unless I can find a sporty chap to accompany me to it!
DeletePerhaps we have all got the wrong idea and it means a return to dominoes by a couple of old chaps in the far corner. Yes I agree it would put me off to, especially in the context of Sporting Bar. I guess they think this is the answer to what to do with failing pubs and in that sense I wish them luck.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to them. I certainly would not go there, but I think that creating a theme & "context" for a pub is the way to go forward now a days...
ReplyDeleteI went in there last night and it's really nice!
ReplyDeleteA vast improvement on the White Swan and a sports bar for people who have had enough of the exchange!

I rather like the name!
ReplyDeletefyi, it is now owned by the same successful 'pub renovation' management team behind the Corner House, Green Man etc.
ReplyDeleteI was sad to see this change when I passed by a couple of weeks ago. With so much rich history here in Winchester, artificial and pseudo nonsense like the name and notice stand out as tasteless.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am heading off there in a few minutes from Oxford...it will be my second visit. I think most of the comments above are soooo negative. Good beers, good food, the Tacos last time were superb and great service from the team at the bar.
