A comment from Paul at Leeds Daily Photo made me think about the pubs that have now disappeared in Winchester. Here on the corner of Hyde Close and Hyde Street is the old Prince of Wales pub. It had been a pub since before 1880 but closed in 2003. Here's a photo of the pub when it was open. In 1902 there were 132 pubs in Winchester, today there are 45, still quite a few, so hopefully visitors to Winchester will find one they like!
45 pubs is still quite something! What is the population of the city?
ReplyDeleteI wish you a wonderful 2011!
I think it's around 40000, so about 888 people per pub - bit of a squash, but if you leave out the children we might fit!
ReplyDeleteI think that out nearest comparison would be the nearby town of Otley where there is I think a little over 800 people per pub. Nice looking building, would not mind living there, but not as a pub. Pubs are a good subject for the CDP, they often have a bit of history. Paul at Leeds daily photo
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice building! Like Paul said they have a history behind! have a wonderful 2011.

Hi, Thanks so much for visiting TORUŃ DAILY PHOTO here in Poland. It's great to see your site as I used to live in Winchester between 1996 and 2000 when I studied at the then King Alfred's College. Your blog brings back loads of memories of this beautiful city.
ReplyDeleteI have fond memories of visiting St.Catherine's Hill...do you have any photos of it on your site?
Hi Torun DP - That's a co-incidence! I have 1 photo from
ReplyDeleteSt Catherines Hill here currently, and a couple more I plan to publish, admittedly they were taken last summer - I have been too much of a wimp to go walking up there this winter!
I'm fascinated by these old pubs and the new uses that they find for them. Sydney has a lot of these too from the days when the city and inner city suburbs had a pub on every corner.

I would die to have a Pub like that in Helsinki...
ReplyDeleteLet's see some Helsinki pubs then!
ReplyDeleteHi I am doing my family tree and William Judd and Kate Sharman - Judd ran the Prince of Wales Pub I was told ....maybe around 1920'ish would this be the same one ? I was told it was pulled down . so I was so surprised to see your site . Is there any records or history I can print off about it.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say I am from Perth western Australia and went to Wichester but didnt look for the Pub because we were told it wasnt there anymore . I just love the old Pubs in England
ReplyDeleteThe Prince of Wales lives on as houses/flats, and as you can see the door remains with the glass showing its previous use. I beleive it was extended at the back to incorporate more flats - defintely not pulled down, it is infact a listed building! The photo link within my post shows what it looked like when it was open. It was certainly closed by 2004, not sure how long before this. I have a book on pubs of Winchester, will hunt it out and post what it says about it.
