Remembrance Sunday
At the Cathedral a service was held today to mark Remembrance Sunday when we remember those in the armed forces who have lost their lives in service. Just outside the Cathedral was this collection of crosses and poppies.
This year I did not make the service here in Leeds, first time in quite a while. Not that I wear my old beret or anything, I do quite like the ceremony and the playing of "Last Post".
I prefer the beautiful white peace poppies. It's time we stopped glorifying war and started glorifying peace instead. If only we spent a little of the defence budget on peacemaking! I am pleased that a few churches had displays of the white peace poppies this year. Militarism breeds violence in a population unfortunately.
They have been produced by the Peace Pledge Union since 1934. Originated by women who were horrified at the loss of life in the First World War. They are not meant as an insult to soldiers who have died but to inspire people to seek peace more actively. Please do look them up online. I often get asked about the white poppy when I wear one every year and people usually then ask where they can get one!
This is a nice way to remember.
ReplyDeleteWe had "Veterans Day" on Friday - the same event I guess!

ReplyDeleteThey had a bugler on the balcony of the cathedral which I think seems to take people by suprise when he starts playing!
