It looks like a huge place. I wonder if it is well attended these days? Some large churches have fallen on hard times over here and old churches have been sold. Some smaller ones are being made into homes. The faithful have all fled the hard benches.
It's visited a lot by tourists paying about $10 for the priviledge - it's free if you say you are going in to pray, I'm not sure whether they have religious police in there to check whether you have crossed the line from praying to looking around!
I keep imagining that one of my relatives might have walked the area in the 1700's and one of their ancestors (and a distant relative) might still be seeing the same views I am on your photo blog.
That is funny to think some would cheat to see inside a church. And what Abraham Lincoln said is a nice way to put it "The faithful have all fled the hard benches". lol I think this photo would also make a beautiful painting.

ReplyDeletePray if you don't want to pay.

That's fair enough. Thanks for visiting.

Becky - A great way of putting it!
ReplyDeleteLarry - I'm sure they did/do, a lot in Winchester has not changed at all for many years
Very lovely indeed.
ReplyDeleteA charming picture and an impressive building!
ReplyDeleteMust be grand living close to that cathedral and hearing the church bells! She's a beauty! How about a look inside, too?
ReplyDeleteI have quite a few photos of the inside - just click on the 'Cathedral' label to have a look
