The River Itchen's source is situated just south of the village of Cheriton in Mid Hampshire, it passes through Winchester and down to Southampton Water and is 28 miles long. The river flows in several different channels through the Winchester, some of which come close enough to Winchester Cathedral to have caused serious problems to the building's foundations in earlier years. The main channel flows through Winchester City Mill along an area known as the Weirs, the river then heads south through a series of water meadows passing the Hospital of St Cross before leaving the city and heading towards the villages of Twyford and Shawford. This photo of the Itchen is in the St Cross area with St Catherine's Hill to the right.
This is a beautiful, but flat country like we have. So you live near Southampton. My sister and I cycled from Holland via Dover, Brighton, Southampton to Longwell Green between Bath and Bristol in 1956. It was rather hilly, but beautiful.

The lone swan makes a very nice scene. Peaceful but a bit forlorn somehow.
ReplyDeleteWil - that's a long way to cycle! I think the Netherlands would be the ideal place for me to cycle - no hills!

Lovely photo. Not only you make great photos, but you're also knowledgeable with the subject or area in the photos. Enjoyable blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
ReplyDeleteIt is a very beautiful walk - I used to go that way most days to meet my son from school. I do miss it.
ReplyDeleteIt is nice in St Cross. Nearly bought a house there, but it fell through in the end and now we are in Hyde, which is nice too!
ReplyDeleteI liked Hyde, we did look at a house there but that fell through for us! My husband wanted to be nearer the leisure centre, but ended up having to cycle there and get extra fit as a result.
