P is for Phone Box

You don't see so many of these old style phone boxes - doesn't everyone have a mobile phone now? This one is pre 1939 designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and was given listed building status in 1987. However its elevation to this great height has not stopped its current condition, a pane of glass missing and something sprayed on the other windows (which seems to be a bit of a theme in Winchester - vandals like their privacy!) An interesting link between the designer of these telephone boxes is that his grandfather Sir George Gilbert Scott was the man who restored The Buttercross in Winchester.

  1. I remember how they used to smell inside, and the way the windows would fog up.

  10. I love these old phone boxes!!! They are very much a part of English heritage!!! I do hope that cities keep them, at the very least, for all of us tourists to photograph (and daily bloggers!)

  11. I think they'll try to keep some of them because they are so iconic, even if they're not really used anymore

  15. Nice. Here we have the public telephones just on a post. On busy streets it is impossible to hear anything.
The "frosted" glass in your red phone booth would be good for Superman's costume changing.

  16. I think now that they are really only kept because they are listed or in conservation areas there is little spent on the upkeep of these lovely old boxes. His grandfathers last work was here in Leeds.

  17. Sad to see these old phone relics go. I like the cell phone, but do not enjoy being forced to listen to other's conversations in public.
