I have tried to get a photo of this Jane Austen's house for ages. Usually there is someone standing outside of it or a car parked there, granted this still isn't the best photo! It was here that the novelist Jane Austen, spent the last few weeks of her life. She had been living nearby at Chawton for several years, but in 1817 her health began to fail and she came to Winchester with her sister Cassandra to receive better medical care. However a few weeks later she died, and was buried at the Cathedral. The house is now a private home.
***I am away at the moment so have scheduled this post, back at the weekend***
I was so disappointed when I discovered that it was a private house, and couldn't be viewed. I suspect it's bigger inside than it looks, as so many of those houses on that street are.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...a bit plainer than I would have thought!!! I would envision her in a lovely little cottage in the country side!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's where she spent just her last few years, while she was very ill and needed to be near doctors.
ReplyDeleteI had either forgotten or perhaps did not know that she spent her last few weeks in Winchester. She was a very witty writer with a great sense of observation. Much of what she observed and wrote about is as true today as the time it was written. I gave a friend Northanger Abbey as a small gift this Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it'd be fascinating to have a look inside
