Chalet
In a few weeks time when the Christmas Market opens this chalet will be one of nearly 100 selling any number of things such as Christmas decorations, hats, food, drink, art, gifts, toys. The market is open from 24 November to 21 December
Oh I wish I could be there - I love Christmas Markets! This little chalet reminds me of Germany, and when I lived in there I used to love walking around, drinking gluwein while I browsed!
Christmas Markets are great places to pick up unusual gifts. We are doing one ourselves next week, the Celtic Winter Fayre in Llandudno, and will be visiting the huge one that takes place in Manchester city centre each December.
Ours opened for business on Friday, I am pretty ambivalent towards it, it being all about making money. Also there is nothing unusual about the continental traders now that our towns and cities have many people now living here from foreign lands.
Christmas markets I think used to be very much a continental European thing, I don't remember there being any when I was younger. I like the idea of them, but I can't say I've ever actually bought anything from one of them!
Paul, it's about more than making money, though there is nothing wrong with providing employment. My friend and I are very grateful to be able to earn a little extra by running a stall for an employer. The market is in such a beautiful setting here and many shoppers told me they were having a wonderful family day out and that they come several times each year for the atmosphere. People of all ages seemed to be having a great time. We have a craft market and a living nativity scene, a bookshop and a peaceful garden, and the goods on sale are generally of high quality. Many of the traders here are local. Chestnuts, mulled wine, ice rink - so many pleasures!

ReplyDeleteThe first year it was introduced I think we only had a couple of dozen chalets - it's certainly grown over the past six years!
