Long Tall Sally

I haven't ever been inside this shop as I often have to have normal clothes shortened! But I'm certain it has a market & they have some nice things in their window

Game over

Our branch of Game has closed. It did always seem quite busy, but obviously not busy enough unfortunately

CY music

CY Music is an independent music shop in Jewry Street. I have been learning to play the piano for the past year or so, and am still pre-grade 1, so I haven't needed to buy too much sheet music yet!

Cornflowers

I had seen a sign in the High Street that said 'Save Cornflowers' and passing by the shop I saw it empty and closed looking. Cornflowers is the Winchester College gift shop which sold not only College related gifts, but many other things.

Click here to see it back last summer. The sign on the window says:

The shop has been in College Street for 15 years however the college decided to close it as it was no longer profitable. There has been a campaign to keep the shop going and one comment, which I agree with, was that the shop is a way that people can relate to the college. The college is looking at alternative uses for the site, including using it as a traditional English tea room. I will drop by later in the month to see what has happened.

Past Times

And another shop gone. Past Times in the High Street was always popular with tourists and had quite a few cute things on sale, but now it is no more in Winchester, and that was even with Australian relatives of our buying up half the contents of the shop just after Christmas!

Here's a photo of the Christmas tree at the Brooks Shopping Centre, it has some lovely colours. Here are some of last year's decorations at the shopping centre

New Co-op

I hadn't noticed this before, but just round the corner from me a new Co-Op small supermarket has opened. The new shop is in City Road on the way to the station and opened on 10 days ago. The store is open from 0700-2300 every day.

Work in progress

Work is currently taking place in The Square and Market Street in Winchester to pedestrianise part of it. Some shop owners apparently aren't too happy about this as The Square is one of the last roads in Winchester city centre where shoppers can legally park their cars directly outside businesses.

Hambledon

I have tried to get a photo of the back of this shop without any cars parked in front of it, but have decided it is not physically possible! This is the rear of The Hambledon, the front is on The Square. It sells clothes, homeware, furniture & cute things

****I am away at the moment with work, back on Friday evening, so have set up these scheduled posts. For my nearest location see This is Belgium****

Cathedral Shop

The Visitors Centre of Winchester Cathedral has a shop, shown here, and through the doorway is the refectory (cafe/restaurant) and a box office. The shop is open every day and is run by 30 volunteer shop assistants. The visitors centre was opened by the Queen in 1993.

Just a few more of the floral displays currently around town. The winner has already been chosen and will be announced in October.

55-56 High Street

At 55-56 High Street is currently a shop called Jack Wills that sells 'authentic and relevant clothing for today'! The building itself was built in 1913 and was originally a cinema and tea house. The cinema had an orchestra pit as talking films had not yet been invented at that time! The cinema operated between 1914-1936.

Blanc ou Blanche?

Spot the grammatical error here - should that not be Maison Blanche seeing as 'maison' is feminine? Although as I understand it this patisserie here is linked to Raymond Blanc, who also has Brasserie Blanc here in Winchester, so I'm certain it's deliberate!

The Pentice

The Pentice is a colonnaded walkway with row of old buildings, now all shops, within the High Street

*** I am away on holiday now for 2 weeks so have scheduled these posts to appear (hopefully!). Thanks for any comments & sorry if I don't respond straightaway. For my nearest location see Lisbon city daily photo and head south! ***

Cornflowers

On the corner of College Street and Kingsate Street is Cornflowers which is the Winchester College Gift Shop. Profits from the shop help fund a place for one of the sixteen Quiristers at the college (choir boys).
The building was once the Winchester College Tuck Shop, and is named after the blue flowers that are worn by Winchester supporters on Winchester Day.

Dolphin Inn

On the corner of the High Street and St Thomas Street is a building currently a clothes shop called Joules. This building was built in 1883 originally as a pub, in a mock Tudor style. The pub was called the Dolphin Inn and there had been a pub of the same name on this site since medieval times. The Dolphin closed its doors in 1981 and I think has been a shop ever since. A closer look over the door you can see the name of the old pub and 2 fish-like creatures.

St Cross Stores

I'm not sure when St Cross stores closed, but I think it must have been a while ago now, the sign still remains.

Pasty wars!

In the High Street near the Buttercross there are 2 pasty shops right next to eachother - Pasty Presto and West Cornwall Pasty Co. They both seem to do a good trade. West Cornwall do perhaps have the upper hand as they have outdoor seating!

Above the eyeline

The building here in the High Street which now houses the shops Cath Kidston and JJB Sports was built in 1806. On this site originally stood The White Hart Inn, dating back to 1417. The innkeeper at the time commissioned the well known architect George Moneypenny to rebuild it. Moneypenny was particularly famous for his prisons, including Winchester goal in Jewry Street (now a pub!). The large window on the first floor also provided an assembly room and was used by the Duke of Wellington when campaigning to become an Member of Parliament gave a speech from the balcony. The White Hart Inn closed in 1857 and its ground floor was divided into 2 shops.

K is for Kingsgate Books & Prints

Built into Kingsgate, one of the 2 remaining city gates of Winchester, is a nice little shop called Kingsgate Books & Prints. It sells antiquarian books, prints and paintings (particularly of Winchester), it also does picture framing.
