Will he, won't he decide to go in?! This is the Crown & Anchor pub in the High Street. I haven't been in here myself. There has been a pub on this site since the mid 19th Century. The current building dates from the early 1930s. As you can see it's also quite floral, I have a feeling the pub is always like this rather than trying to win the Winchester in Bloom prize as I have seen other photos of it with just as many hanging baskets.
I can recommend their 'Lite Bites' if you just want a snack.

Since moving here a year ago I have tried slowly to do a 'pub crawl' of all the pubs in Winchester (not all in 1 night I hasten to add!) But it has been overtaken by my 'restaurant crawl' instead!

ReplyDeleteLove the look of this old pub, crown and anchor was a dice game popular with sailors in the navy many years ago. Sadly Gerald is right, pubs are closing at an alarming rate across the country. I say alarming because these are often quite historic building and also part of our social history as a nation. ReplyDeleteYou're right Paul & Gerald there are pubs now closing in Winchester, so far it's been confined to some in the outlying villages and edge of town, but it's a shame because they are buildings with such history
