F is for Fire Station

The 'F' has already fallen off as you can see and there's no need to replace it as today is the day the fire brigade leave Winchester. The building has been sold and will be developed into luxury apartments/houses. The fire brigade now has a new fire station on the outskirts of town. It seems that eventually all services occupying buildings in the centre of Winchester are moved out of town and their buildings sold off to be converted into housing. The military left their barracks some years ago (see here). We still have a hospital, police station and prison - they would make such lovely apartments...!

  1. That's funny, a falling F for today.
I hope the new firestation is not too far from where people actually live.
Here is my village they even convert old chicken houses into apartments.

  2. I agree with Dina, a falling F for the F Day!! Doesn't get any better!! It is amusing to think of fancy apartments being built from an old fire station! But it does sound like the way things are TODAY -- everywhere! Hope your week is going well! Enjoy!

  3. Seems that in Britain, anything can be refurbished, including falling down farm buildings! It would be fascinating to see the change later when there are fancy apartment buildings in the fire brigade's place. Have a wonderful week,

  4. Nice looking building, perhaps they will keep the pole as a feature for the new occupiers. As a boy my uncle was station officer at a fire station in London and myself and my cousins would try out the pole.

Interesting thought Paul, I wonder if they will keep the pole or a hose or 2!

  14. I would hope that it is not going to be a major development, in Oxford have the same problems, with the developers squeezing as many apartments as they can into these old buildings. I hate it personally.

    Nice Blog
