Willow Tree

The Willow Tree pub is almost on an island with its picturesque rear garden in a triangular shape divided by 2 streams of the Itchen River. The pub originally belonged to the Winchester Brewery (sadly no more) and is now owned by Greene King. Recently under new management, on their website they refer to themselves as a Riverside Restaurant and Wine Bar and appear to be focusing more on food, their facebook page has some rave reviews of their steaks! Last year they placed a giant St George's flag covering the entire front of the pub in honour of England competing in the football World Cup (they probably shouldn't have bothered..!)

  1. I like the sound of the riverside garden. For a very long time Leeds was home to Tetley, the brewer but with the takeover by Carlsberg in 1992 their future was not their own. Now the brewery will close in June, with production moved to Northampton. Not being much of a beer drinker I have yet to feature Tetley on my Leeds daily photo but I guess I will the week they close for good.

  2. What an interesting building, is that rock forming the structure with the bricks?

  4. I think we all like the brickwork. I am curious though, what is Modern British Cooking?

  5. I think the building is part made from flint, which gives it that look. Lots of buildings have that in Winchester.

Modern British Cooking? Not sure if there is any official definition! From their menu it includes Greek and French salad, Chicken Peri-Peri and pasta - so who knows! Maybe it just means cooked in Britain in the 21st Century!
