G is for Graffiti

At what point does graffiti become something historic? Here on a pillar in the cathedral we see someone has carved their initials IE and the year 1722 into the stone. This is an interesting piece of history and shows how old the building is (although it is much older than 1722). To the left some 244 years later we see someone has also carved their initials SB 1966, blatant vandalism, defacing this beautiful ancient pillar with anything so modern as the 60's!

  2. it's like old cars or old papers - they go from being junk to antiques and history.

  3. In the 60s I remember seeing tourists carving their initials into the stones of an ancient Greek temple. I tried to discourage them but they looked at me with boredom and just kept carving. Their disregard for ancient relics was astounding to me.

  5. Thought provoking post. I don't condone grafitti but like the sense of history from the simple initials and date.

  7. There is a monastery in Winchester which has some fantastic graffiti carved into the choir. Thanks for your comment on my blog. I'm going to have a look around here.

  8. I probably shouldn't say this, but I love that someone in 1722, left their mark there. It is very neatly done, also.

Thanks for visiting my G post today.

  9. Great post for today! I agree it's somewhat shameful, but then again it makes me wonder who was the person who did it - way back when. Have a great week,

  10. an interesting topic, in 1722 maybe they didn't know better, but now it would be vandalism for sure.

  11. I have to agree with This too will pass, here in Leeds they have a permanent crew on cleaning away graffiti, some may see it as art, maybe I could key my name into the paintwork on their car or bike? No thought not. Here at Leeds daily photo I have never got into theme days, tried one last month but mine never showed up...

  12. True, I wouldn't want graffiti on anything of mine. This post aside we don't have too much of a problem with it here, thankfully.

Theme Days are fine for me as long as they match a photo I have already taken!
