Set back from St Thomas Street are these interesting houses behind hedges. These hidden houses were built on the site of the church of St Petroc which fell into decay in the 14th century following the Black Death and was rebuilt in 1428 and re-dedicated to St Thomas the Martyr. This 2nd church was itself demolished in 1845. All that can be seen today of this church is the well-kept churchyard with old tombstones betraying its former use. I don't really believe in ghosts, but I'm not sure I'd want graves right outside my front door..!

ReplyDeleteIt looks as a gorgeous house to me ! tombstones in my garden wouldn't disturb me, they are a very special decoration (;) ! These old tombstones around churches in little villages are so interesting, I love to read what it's written on. Saw them for the first time when I visited my friends in Eastbourne in 2007. In Belgium they are not so "ghostly" !
ReplyDeleteNow that is very different to have your front lawn covered with tombstones, but also interesting. I love the house and would like to think how happy the dear departed would be living there with you.

ReplyDeleteHere in KC there are many places with just a few headstones, shopping malls, backyards.... This was all farm land and they buried their kin under the tree.
ReplyDeleteMy sister drove me past a cottage in Suffolk two days ago, just to show me a house with a garden surrounded by gravestones, we thought it was very funny! It didn't look like a church or a chapel that had been converted, just a very pretty old cottage.
ReplyDeleteYou'd have to love the garden as it is if you bought that house, wouldn't you? You couldn't suddenly decide that you wanted a decking patio just outside the door!
It's certainly unique!
