Old Wykehamist Bakery

And they wanted to knock it down! More from Canon Street, this building is from the 17th Century, I can't find too much infomation on this building, but presume that it must have been Winchester College's bakery.

  1. They should re-open it as a bakery and make the college boys work there!

  2. Now there's a thought! Maybe an old boy of the college opened it up.

  3. Many years ago I had a long conversation with a nice old gent, after I had bought him a beer, in the Wykeham Arms and he told me that his grandfather worked in that bakery as a delivery boy and later became the head baker.

I wish now that I had paid more attention to him and made notes. I didn't even ask his name.

    1. That's really interesting, I bet there are many stories like that out there about places in Winchester which really bring them to life

  6. Actually, it was a bakery just before the turn of the Century and up until about 1911. The cellar has a passage to the Cathedral that was used by all the canons during the Cromwell era to reach the safety of the Cathedral. The house was not for sale in 2012 but it will soon be the new home for a young couple ready to settle in Winchester.
