Old & new

I spotted these modern looking flats off of St Swithun Street, sitting next to the Green Man pub. The top floor has some has some very nice coloured glass.

  1. I love the contrast between the old and modern architecture. I just have to visit England one of these years!

  2. Nice glass shame about the building though. They did like flint in the buildings built back then in Winchester.

  3. Question? Is the red in Green Man the flint?

  4. No - the red is the bricks. Flint is stone, there is quite a bit in the area. I had quite a nasty arguement with a flint wall on a tight bend in a narrow old Winchester street - my car was too big to get around the corner! Flints are very hard and sharp - it's what our ancestors used to make their arrowheads and axes from.

  6. It makes me really angry when I see beautiful old buildings besides these ugly glass boxes !!

  7. It doesn't fit in too well with the older building.

  8. I'm sure the new building is very nice. It would be nicer farther away from the nice little red brick pub.

  9. Yes there's a lot of flint & brick buildings round here. I think one of the worst eyesores in Winchester is the ugly hotel opposite the cathedral, it has flint & brick, but a horrible flat roof, good views from it though!

  10. I like the old building. It looks tweedy. Like something Kaffe Fassett would knit!
